Top Ten Countdown - Music Blogfest

Alex is having one of his GREAT Blogfests again today. They're so much fun! They can also be difficult. As a child of the 80s, I grew up with some great music! It was tough to narrow it all down to 10 songs.

1) Frank DeVol - Teddy Bear's Picnic
This was my favorite childhood song. Listening to it now, I'm not sure why it made me happy instead of giving me nightmares. The idea of Teddy Bears in the forest? And the warning not to go into the woods? But I loved it. Played it over and over and over and over...

2) San Diego Super Chargers Song
I grew up on San Diego football - first game at 2 years old. Here is the extended dance version, I believe. I love it in all disco greatness. They had P.O.D. do a new song in 2009, but this one is old school and my fave.

3) Def Leppard - Photograph
My introduction to "heavy metal" and MTV. Loved the song. Loved the video. Loved Rick Allen.

4) Morris Day and the Time - Jungle Love
I can't explain it. It's the beat? I hear this song and I can't NOT dance.

5) Christina Aguilera - Walk Away
This song is all about BAD ROMANCE. It's such a fantastic display of her vocal range. It just feels naughty. The year it came out, I was in a relationship that needed to be over. But walking away was so hard. This song was my theme song those two years.

6) Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years
My father and I did not see eye to eye when I was growing up. The only girl, when I hit my teen years I think I completely baffled him. Also, I was the most like him out of all the kids. My theory? My father is full of self-loathing. He didn't want me to be like him for that reason. He loved me too much. So he tried to squash (that's a very gentle way of putting it) the traits we shared. Very sad because I feel those are my strengths. We have healed our relationship in the past decade and are closer than ever. But this song really spoke to me for the longest time. The lyrics are so touching, and true.

7) Kings of Leon - Use Somebody

8) Muse - Uprising
I love the rebellion.

9) Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out for a Hero
Cheesy. 80s. Enough said.

10) Doug E Fresh - The Show
It's fun. It's fresh. It's Doug E Fresh. This one takes me back to my high school years.

This was VERY hard to do!

Coldplay is my all time favorite band. They didn't make the top ten because I love all of their songs and couldn't narrow it down to just one. Yellow and Clocks...almost made the Top Ten. Almost.

What about you - what are some of your favorite songs? Could you narrow it down?

Don't forget to check out the rest of the entries at Alex's blog.

  1. I had a hard time nailing it down to just ten, but eventually I got my list. You have some really good songs on this list, some of which I haven't heard.

    Well done in your choice,

    Yvonne.

  6. As someone who wasn't born in the 80s, I kinda feel a bit stupid cos besides Christina, Kings of Leon, Muse and Bonnie Tyler, I haven't heard the rest :-\

But I'm going to listen now.

    Also, Coldplay is awesome.

I mostly like all of Within Temptation and Evanescence's songs, so it'd be hard narrowing down the list. Yeah, I'm a total gothic metal chick!

  15. Muse is on my countdown, too. Def Leopard brings back so many memories ... Wonderful list.

  16. I love Christina’s “Walk Away”. All of her songs have such a level of emotion to them that they inspire me to write emotional scenes. At the time Walk Away came out, my aunt was undergoing a divorce from her domestically abuse husband so that song has special meaning for me and my cousin.

  17. When I was 11, we danced to Jungle Love for our dance recital!! It was so awesome-- neon pink catsuits with black sequins and cheetah spots down one side!! Complete that with a teased side ponytail and a black sequined headband!!

  29. I LOVE your list!! Love it!
I had a giggle at teddy bear's picnic. I grew up on that. Even learned to play it on the piano. Hahaha

  30. There's some Def Leppard! And The Living Years is just so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Your first two choices made me smile. That Muse track is great one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jennie, thanks for the list. I agree with you about "Photograph". And I totally forgot about "The Living Years". I still have my Dad, but I wonder what might happen when he's gone and this song comes on. It'll be a killer...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great list! CP Yellow was on mine! Love them!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love, love that you included Morris Day and the Time. Purple Rain is one of my favorite movies. Def Leppard rocks! Photograph one of my car stereo must plays.

I had the worst time trying to narrow my list to just ten. Your list is awesome.

  37. Top 10 songs really is tough. You made some good choices, though!

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was difficult indeed to narrow it down. my fave band of all time (The Smashing Pumpkins) DID make it in, but only because I've long had a favourite song of theirs...even if I listen to other songs of theirs WAY more than I do that one. weird, huh? :P

I enjoyed reading your entry and am getting my hands on that Def Leppard song and a couple of others now ;)

  39. This is a total party mix CD. LOVE it!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love Kings of Leon. Use Somebody is such a fantastic song.

  41. Interesting list I didn't know them. Thought the including of the Chargers Song was a great idea!

  42. I abso-freaking-lutely love your list

  43. NICE LIST.
My fav coldplay song is green eyes. But I also love Don't Panic.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great list-a lot of diverse choices.

I saw Muse last year-great show, great band.

"Holding Out For A Hero" is classic Jim Steinman cheese, but sung by Ms. Tyler instead of Meat Loaf. Steinman is the master of taking a cliche and making it a song (usually with bombastic Wagnerian overtones!

  45. Great list. I particularly love your first two because they're so unique. I never would have thought to put a football song on my list.

So I couldn't place "Holding Out for a Hero" so I started it. Now it's running through my head after I only played 20 seconds of it. I suspect it will be there for days :) Must be a sign of a good song, right?

  46. You deserve a prize for originality. I LOVE that you started with the teddy bear song. In fact, I love your whole list. Every Generation is so heartwarming. I just finished my little dance to Love Jungle. I also can't not dance to that one! Thanks for this and the follow. I'm excited to join the fun around here too.

  47. I'm a child of the 80s too, but find myself drawn to more contemporary music, though 80s was the soundtrack of my life for a loooooong time!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yay for Kings of Leon - and Coldplay! I couldn't narrow my choices by song either, so I made playlists [g]

  49. Wow, that's a very diverse list. Thanks for blogfesting with the rest of us!
