Worst Movies Ever Blogfest

Alex is having another one of his fantastically awesome blogfests.

Here, in no particular order, are ten of the worst movies that I have ever seen (and this was much harder to narrow down that I would have thought!):

1) Titanic - That's right, I said it! If she had gotten in the boat with her mother, he would have had the door to himself. SHE killed him. That's not romantic. It's sad.

2) Showgirls - I don't what is the worst part of this film: the cheesy dialogue or the over the top acting.

3) Battlefield Earth - Bad script, bad acting, bad idea.

4) Dances with Wolves - I know that I'm going to take a lot of crap for this. I'm NOT a Costner fan. He phoned this one in completely. I fell asleep in the theater. Because I thought it was ME, I tried it again on video...twice. Fell asleep both times. I actually use it on nights when my insomnia is particularly severe. His droning voice has me out in no time.

5) Howard the Duck - It's a duck. Who smokes. And the song is incredibly annoying! This might not have made my list, but I spent a summer as a nanny and I had to watch this every. single. day. It was enough to drive me mad. The 4 year old could not get enough of that man in a duck suit.

6) Congo - Bruce Campbell was the best part of this movie. He was the only good part of the movie. I know movie adaptations are expected to be bad, but this one went above and beyond. Maybe because the book was so incredible (in my opinion), we expected the movie to be the same? Or at least decent. It fell far, far short.

7) Lady in the Water - I think when you set the bar as high as he did with The Sixth Sense, it's natural to fall a little short. A little. This one didn't seem to leave the ground. It tripped and face planted. Slow and boring. When I saw it, I wasn't surprised Disney passed.

8) Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief - Such a disappointment. I really don't understand why you would take a best selling book and stray so far from it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? This was a great book. They even messed up the next movie in the series with their twisting of the story. I'm sure that's why it's not even slated for production until next year sometime. They probably had a heck of a time figuring out how to fix it...

9) Cowboys vs. Aliens - This movie had so much potential. I wanted so badly for it to reach that potential. What an amazing cast! It actually was a very good western until the aliens came in at the end. It was such a waste of talent.

10) Freddie Got Fingered - I have to admit that I didn't do much research on this movie before I took my ex-fiance's ten year old son to see it. Have you seen it? Imagine watching the elephant scene with a ten year old seated next to you. Yes, this whole experience taught me that you never, ever, ever let the ten year old pick the movie AT the box office without having watched a trailer and checked the rating on the movie first. This is probably the worst movie I have ever seen in my life.

Be sure to check out all the other entries over at Alex J. Cavanaugh's blog.

What about you - what are some of the worst movies you've ever seen?

  1. I'm sick of Titanic. I was good when I was a teen, only because Leo was hot but now I just think it's way too cheesy for my liking.

I enjoyed Dances with Wolves though.

  2. Kevin Costner's droning monologue in Dances with Wolves made me want to cry. Never saw Freddy, only because Tom Green annoys me. I'm glad I didn't, now!

  3. Battlefield Earth continues to lead the pack. I did like Cowboys and Aliens though.
Thanks for participating in the blogfest!

  4. I should have put Battlefield Earth on my list too. But I never saw it. I hate John Travolta's so called acting so I won't watch anything with him in it.

I'd rather sit through a 20 hour Nick Cage movie marathon than want ONE Travolta movie.

  5. see Battlefield Earth didn't even make my list.

  7. I haven't seen Percy Jackson--too bad they changed the plot! The book is so awesome. And yes for Titanic--if she had gotten on the boat or moved over on the HUGE door, Leo would have lived!

  8. LOL! Titanic... *snort*. That movie was so much worse on the small screen. It was the first time I realized how much effects change your viewing of a film.

And Showgirls. SO bad. I think all the hype surrounding its release also contributed. :D

this is such a fun fest. Yay! :o)

  9. I never even bothered watching Percy Jackson and the Olympian, after all I'd read about it. I really like the series and hate seeing books changed too much.

  10. I was forced to watch Dances With Wolves in a college course - and I HATED it! I couldn't stay awake, so you have no argument from me. I'm glad someone shares my opinion of that movie!

  11. Showgirls and Congo made my list too!

That's a really good point about Titanic. Hello, selfish girl who kills the love of her life...

And agree, Battlefield Earth was terrible. Good call!

  12. Yep, you got it! "DANCES WITH WOLVES" was BAD! And you can take it from me, a Westernaholic.

It was trying SO HARD to be profound that you could actually see the film SWEATING!

  13. Freddy got Fingered made my list too. just the previews for Cowboys vs Aliens was enough for me

  14. Yeah, not a fan of Titanic, either. Meh. Great picks!

  15. I liked Percy Jackson, but I didn't read the books... my stepdaughter said it was really different. You made me laugh when you said you use Dances with Wolves to go to sleep!!

  16. Lots of votes for Battlefield Earth. It deserves them. :)Showgirls is pretty sad, and I'm grateful I never laid eyes on Howard.

  17. I actually liked Dances With Wolves and remember seeing it when my son was a baby. This gave me the brilliant idea to give him the special Indian name, Poops In His Shorts.

  18. YES! on the titanic flop! i hated the whole kate and leo part plot! the only parts that ripped at my heart were when the old couple hugged in bed, and the mama tucked her babies in, and the band kept playing... those were the heartbreaking things! the rest was just... ugh! annoying!

and i did actually love lady in the water. it was just very, very different than his other work. and odd. and i like odd.

and my nine-year-old TOTALLY agrees with you about percy! heeheehee! every time he rereads a book in that series (i've lost track, i think he's read each of them at least 7 times) i hear about his disgust with the movie... although he's such a riordan fan-boy he wants the movie for christmas! and every book that riordan puts out between now and then- which by the way will probably be more than one- how does he do it!?!?! that man is a writing monster! awesome! ok, sorry for blabbing! :)

  19. I'd planned to list just about every movie by Shyamalan, and then I forgot what I was doing... which is typical of me. I agree with most of those except Dances with Wolves. I loved that. But I agree with Titanic and Showgirls... ugh!!

  20. I want to see Cowboys vs. Aliens. I think Battle for Earth is leading the pack.

  21. I was disappointed in Titanic too - I don't see many in the theaters, but I saw that one. Didn't do much for me, so you're not alone! :)

  22. Great list Jennie- any fan of Bruce Campbell is ALL-RIGHT in my breviary :)
I agree about Costner 'phoning in' his roles (even in THE UNTOUCHABLES). I do have a fondness for the redemptive nature/storyline of the Paul Giametti character in LADY IN THE WATER...but that's a minor quibble :)
    Great blog by the way!

  23. I didn't like Titanic either. It left me haunted for days. I wouldn't have been if it hadn't been based on true events but many died on that ship.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My ex's best friend LOVED Titanic. He loved it so much he dragged us to the theater more than once to watch it. I wasn't impressed the first time and definitely can't stand it now.

  25. "he would have had the door to himself" - hahaha that's brilliant! Though I actually did like Titanic... :-)

Percy Jackson was a disaster on so many levels. Seriously, could they have found worse teen actors? I sat through that movie just for glimpses of Sean Bean and Kevin McKidd.

  26. Looks good! Thanks for the update! Followed!

  27. Agree Titantic was crap and yeah like Battlefied Earth, most of those were just a bad idea altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I forgot about Showgirls. I wish I hadn't remembered.
Ohhhhh... Howard the Duck. I have a soft spot in my heart for that movie. BUT it does make me remember Masters of the Universe, which could easily make the list.

  29. I laughed out loud with your comment on Titanic. So funny.

  30. I am sensing a trend. Seems like when aliens show up in the end, the movie sucks (Abyss, the last Indiana Jones, and Cowboys and Aliens).
Hmm, maybe I should write a book about it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I saw Cowboys & Aliens the day after I saw Apollo 18. It was only good by comparison!

There's a third Mummy movie? How did I miss that? (sarcasm)

    ReplyDelete
  32. We have a couple movies in common, but I loved Titanic! Lady in the Water was just confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG - I agree with almost all of your picks! Although I really liked Titanic, maybe because Kate Winslet and Leonardo deCaprio are on my list of the favorite actors :-)
